Midwifery, as practiced by Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) within the Harris Health System (HHS), includes care of childbearing people during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Midwives also care for newborns immediately following birth and family planning services, including preconception care, prescription of contraception, placement, removal, and management of contraceptive devices. Other responsibilities include sexual, reproductive, and gynecologic healthcare; primary care for women from adolescence throughout their lifespan; initial and ongoing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment; the prescription of medications, supplements, and other pharmacotherapeutics. In addition to those responsibilities mentioned above, it also includes physical examinations; admission, management, and discharge of childbearing people requiring hospitalization, which includes ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests; ordering medical devices, durable medical equipment, and home health services; health promotion, disease prevention, risk assessment management, and individualized wellness education and counseling.
These services are provided in partnership with individuals and families and other healthcare team members in community clinics within the HHS, telehealth and other methods of remote care delivery, and Ben Taub Hospital. While in many cases, CNMs assume complete responsibility for patient care, CNMs also consult with, collaboratively manage with, or refer patients to physicians and other healthcare providers within the Harris Health system, as indicated by the patient's health status. BCM CNMs in the HHS refer to the Perinatal Guidelines for BCM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for midwifery practice guidelines.
