Job Description

Associate / Full Professor of Native American Studies: Indigenous Hemispheric Perspectives

Position Overview:
'Off-scale salaries' and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience. A reasonable estimated salary range for this position is $[Insert]-$[Insert], inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components.

In collaboration with UC Online and colleagues throughout the system, the Department of Native American Studies at the University of California-Davis is developing a systemwide minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies to support current and future related degree programs throughout the UCs, while also deepening relationships and synergies amongst our programs.

To help further that effort, we invite applications for an Associate or Full Professor to begin on July 1, 2025, after completing the UC procedures for appointment with tenure. We welcome applications from senior scholars with demonstrated campus, community, national, and even international leadership. We also welcome applications from publicly-engaged scholars whose research programs demonstrate deep accountability to Indigenous communities.

The successful application will assume leadership of the UC systemwide online NAS minor. In addition, the chosen candidate will be expected to teach one annual graduate seminar their field of expertise and, when needed, share in the teaching of some of the core courses in the graduate program (two of which are Indigenous Research Methodologies, and Basic Concepts in NAS). Above all, applicants must demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, especially innovation in online instruction.

Applicants should have PhD in Native American (American Indian, Indigenous, First Nations) Studies and/or have sustained a clear focus on Native and Indigenous issues through a related or allied disciplinary or interdisciplinary field from the humanities or social sciences (ethnic studies, Latin American Studies, law, history, anthropology, literature, public health, education, art, gender studies, etc.) Topical expertise should complement and extend beyond the current strengths and interests of our interdisciplinary faculty.

Successful candidates should have an active research program outside the continental United States. Geographic focus could be in Latin America, Amazonia, First Nations in Canada, Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean or Pacific Islands colonized by U.S. empire, and/or with international Indigenous or mixed-ethnicity populations living in diaspora in the continental United States. We especially welcome candidates with true hemispheric versatility, addressing the intertwined and mutual relations of Indigenous peoples from northernmost Arctic (Utqiavik) to Tierra del Fuego (Onisin).

Questions may be addressed to Professor Liza Grandia, NAS Department Chair, at lgrandia@ucdavis.edu .
