Job Description

The Transition Learning Support Program is dedicated to empowering students with diagnosed learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. We aim to guide students toward their academic goals through tailored lessons and explicit executive functioning instruction. This is accomplished through the implementation of research-based strategies and a responsive classroom experience carefully curated for each student's unique strengths and needs. As more than an educational initiative, the Transition program bridges the gap between diagnosed learning differences and academic success.

Position Summary: This role focuses on delivering and assessing effective sixth-grade instruction while supporting students with learning disabilities or ADHD. Key responsibilities include lesson planning, integrating executive functioning strategies, employing diverse teaching methods, managing classroom behavior, utilizing technology for learning, and maintaining clear communication with students and parents. Additionally, the teacher must accurately document student performance and fulfill other assigned duties.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Evaluation of materials and effective instruction of the sixth-grade curriculum
  • Planning, developing, and monitoring instructional lessons 
  • Evaluate and document student performance accurately and effectively
  • Communicate expectations and achievement benchmarks clearly to both students and parents 
  • Implementation of a variety of teaching and learning strategies to teach mainstream content to bright students who have Learning Disabilities or Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Integrate executive functioning strategy and support into daily instruction
  • Help all students develop the reading, writing, listening, math, and executive functioning skills needed for academic progress 
  • Skillfully apply behavior management techniques in the classroom 
  • Use various software programs for academic skills practice and assignment production 
  • Other Duties as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of national and state standards 
  • Working knowledge of and experience in teaching sixth-grade curriculum
  • Passion for and understanding of the development and learning needs of a Lower School student (grades 4th-6th)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Interpersonal and diplomacy skills that are essential to building strong partnerships with students, parents, and peers 
  • Solid understanding of learning science and best practices in education, as well as differentiated instructional techniques and strategies to support students with complex learning profiles, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD 
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills
  • Proficiency with a range of technologies 
  • Willingness to continue learning by taking courses, attending workshops and conferences, engaging in book studies, etc. 
  • Engaging teaching style and promotion of an inclusive learning environment in the classroom

Minimum Job Qualifications: 

  • B.A. degree in Learning Disabilities, Special Education, or Early Childhood Education (with heavy coursework in learning disabilities); Master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching students with diagnosed learning differences 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Solid understanding of learning science, child development, and best practices in teaching and learning 
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and best practices for students with diagnosed learning differences 
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents toward student achievement 

The Math Teacher, Lower School 6th Grade Transition position is an exempt, 10-month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
