College/Department Information The Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine is charged with conducting high-impact original biomedical research and translating the findings to clinical applications, and in educating future physicians and researchers. Research in the Department incorporates elements of basic and translational neuroscience, particularly as related to neuronal degeneration and regeneration. Research in the Stranahan lab addresses fundamental questions in the neuroscience of obesity using rodent models.

Job Summary We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join our dynamic and fast-paced team. The Research Associate's primary duties require advanced knowledge in neuroscience, as reflected by prolonged, specialized, intellectual instruction and study and the undergraduate or graduate level. Qualified applicants should possess a strong background in neuroimmunology or immunology, with prior experience using transgenic mouse models, flow cytometry, and ex vivo assays. This position is 100% onsite and the successful candidate will receive intensive support for their professional development and long-term goals.
The employee's primary duties require advanced knowledge in neuroimmunology, as reflected by prolonged, specialized, intellectual instruction and study at the graduate and/or postgraduate level. These duties include, but are not limited to experiments using transgenic mouse models; cell and molecular assays; advanced imaging techniques; small animal surgery; analyzing and interpreting data and coordinating with PI on research plans. This position is 100% onsite (no telework).
Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while insuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines. Carry out cell isolation, ex vivo assays, and flow cytometry according to established protocols in the lab. Perform immunohistochemistry, PCR, real time PCR, western blotting, tissue culture, brain surgeries, and microscopic analysis. Maintain detailed records of all procedures according to prescribed formatting. Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques reported in published research. General management for labs and perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities Responsibilities to include but not limited to: Participate in project planning and development of research protocols to ensure adherence to accept scientific research principles, compliance with human assurance and the FDA.
Participate in physical examination, testing and/or treatment of study patients for research purposes; read and record vital signs; obtain tissue and/or fluid samples for further testing; document study specific procedures and outcomes in study patient's medical record.
Advise principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities.
May perform a variety of administrative duties such as ordering equipment and supplies; responsible for maintenance of equipment schedules.
Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other employees engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work.
Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical and/or radio- chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro- serological, histological and cell culture procedures.
Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and operate electron microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment; instructs others in operation of equipment.
Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develops derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects.
Analyze results of research experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques; may develop special computer program to facilitate analysis.
Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; reviews articles prepared by others.
Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications Master or Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and relevant basic research experience in neuroscience, immunology, or physiology
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, or other majors directly related to the research area, plus at least three years basic research experience using rodent models.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities KNOWLEDGE Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
This position requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, visual acuity, and fine motor control.
ABILITIES Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Candidate must be capable of writing legibly, working safely around biological materials, washing glassware and dealing appropriately with sharps, remembering storage locations, and monitoring lab inventory and supplies.
Research in the Stranahan lab involves animal models of progressive disease. All experimental outcomes vary over a 24hr cycle, so the successful candidate must be capable of arriving on time and maintaining a set schedule.
Because research animals are very sensitive to smell, staff are not permitted to wear perfume, cologne, aftershave, or other strongly scented personal care products.
Shift/Salary/Benefits This position is 100% onsite (no telework).
Shift: Days; Monday-Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Pay Grade: R14
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
